Coventry Half Marathon 2018

Published: Thursday, 02 November 2017

Coventry’s Half Marathon will return to the city’s streets on Sunday 18 March 2018 it has been announced today.

Following discussions between the Council and Coventry University Students’ Union, a way forward has been agreed whereby the Coventry Half Marathon can be delivered through a consortium agreement.

The agreement means Coventry University Students’ Union Ltd (CUSU Ltd) will be responsible for the management and delivery of the 2018 event. They will be supported by a number of partners associated with the running community across the city, in addition to the Council.

The agreement is based on an initial one year arrangement with a two year extension agreement if the event proves successful for both parties.

Councillor Abdul Khan, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member responsible for Events, said:

“As a Council we welcome the news that the popular event will again be taking place in March next year and we are very supportive of the event progressing in this way.

“We want to build on the successes of last year, in particular the engagement of local partners involved in the delivery of this year’s event and the new partnerships that have been formed to ensure another great event for the city.

“We were very aware that event partners were keen to develop and build the local model which would enhance the feeling that Coventry’s Half Marathon is being delivered by the people of the city.”

John Abell, General Manager, Coventry University Students’ Union Ltd said:

“Coventry University Students' Union is delighted to be organising Coventry Half Marathon.

“We know our students really enjoyed helping with the event last year and believe this is a great way to support the city's sports strategy.

“We hope to make lots of money for Coventry charities and involve many Coventry organisations in the delivery of the event”

Event organisers are very keen to get the save the date message out as March events are very popular in the lead up to large marathon events in 2018.

Local partners and organisations will remain at the heart of delivering the annual event, a move being especially welcomed by Coventry and Warwickshire clubs.

Dave Long, Coventry's fastest Half Marathon runner (time 61:17) and Double Olympian added:

"Local and visiting runners alike will be delighted to have a confirmed date of Sunday 18th March for the 2018 Coventry Half Marathon.

“The involvement of local clubs will be really important to the event by giving competitors a boost both in terms of practical help and providing support and encouragement along the course's entire 13.1 miles".

Registration for the event will open shortly and people can find more information by searching for Coventry Half Marathon on Facebook and Twitter.

The 2017 event saw over 4,500 people take to the streets with 3,400 runners tackling the main half marathon route and over 1,200 children and supporters take part in the Dol-y-Moch mile event in the city centre.
